Audio Only Extraction from 1394 (Firewire) streams

Steps to extract audio from mini dv camera

  1. Capture video and audio from fire wire using pinnicle express or equivalent and save to a 13gb .AVI file.

  2. Extract the 48 KhZ stereo audio and save to wave file using VirtualDub

  3. Convert to 44.1 khz with nero ENCODE under extras tools.

  4. Burn audio CD in nero.  Spit tracks to approx 3-5 minutes apiece for easy accessing during play back

  5. Set pause between tracks to zero, except first track which has to be set to two seconds.

Notes on above:

step 2.  sample rate may vary.  This step is required because splitting of tracks in step 4  screws up if using 48khz samples with nero (as of v5.9.9 and earlier).

For MP3 replace step 3 above with the following

   3.  Convert file created with VirtualDub to an MP3 file by using CDex or equivalent.

  4.  For easy indexing, split single MP3 file into 3 minute chunks by using MP3 DirectCut or equivelant.

Notes:

 2.  Again, this step is necessary because some low life mp3 players do not handle source sample rates other than good old 44.1k  Such is the case with the Samsung MCD-SM60.

 Hints:

To determine the source SAMPLE rate of an MP3, use EXTRAS-> FILE ENCODING under Nero Burning Rom.  Choose ADD, choose file, then click OK.

Sample rate of source will now be viewable in the SOURCE FILE INFO box below.
